The current guidance from state and local medical personnel is that we should take seriously the deceitfully contagious and very dangerous nature of the COVID virus. While there has been much exaggeration by many, the seriousness of the virus has been confirmed by our own brethren who are medical professionals and are daily facing the virus.
As we look for a spiritual precedent to guide our actions, the following Biblical teaching is guiding our every decision: Hebrews 10:24-25 (Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:1-2), Matthew 18:20, and many others.
A passage of particular application happens to be Leviticus 13 regarding the very infectious disease of leprosy. In this passage, the Lord’s instructions regarding an uncertain diagnosis of the disease is thematically one of great caution and quarantine until a physical determination can be made.
We are in an extremely similar situation today with a highly infectious and dangerous disease that threatens the Lord’s people. Furthermore, with no tests or symptoms to identify those currently infected, it is easily understood that we may all be carriers until more time passes. While Leviticus is an Old Testament passage, it does reveal God's timeless view and approach to an infectious disease threatening His people.
It is after a long and prayerful deliberation that we have decided to cancel the public worship services at West Knoxville through April 5th. According to the medical professionals, this should give the virus time to peak, tests for infections to be made available, and medications for treatment be determined.
We are watching the situation closely and will provide additional guidance in the near future.
