Compromise is one of Satan's most dangerous tools. It is also one of the toughest things a Christian must learn to master. Very early on in one's faith, almost immediately after being converted, it seems the new Christian comes face to face with having to say "No" to something to which he used to say "Yes." He must remember that now things are different. He is a "new creature" in Christ. Old things have passed away (2 Cor. 5:17).
I've often talked to young saints and the following questions are usually on their minds. "What's the secret to getting stronger in my faith?" "There is no secret," I reply. "The main thing is to never compromise." Then they ask, "When does the courage come easier to say 'No' to some things?" All I can ever say is, "Such strength can only come through time...the time it takes to build your faith." As an example, I usually point them in the direction of Moses. Many are surprised because they know Moses to have been a giant among servants of God, and don't see the comparison between themselves in their young faith and him. Ahh...but look at all the record, not just his later years.
When given his assignment at the burning bush, what kind of man was he? He was looking for ways out of God's will (Ex. 3:10 - 4:17). It was only later that he showed the strength needed to resist Pharaoh's offer at a compromise (10:24). By this time the Egyptian king had yanked Moses' chain 4 times with promises to let Israel go, only to change his mind later. Moses could have reasoned, "This might be the best offer I get...I better take it." No, rather he boldly claimed, "Therefore, our livestock, too, will go with us; not a hoof will be left behind" (10:26).
I'm not so sure the "Moses" from the burning bush would have spoken so boldly as this "Moses." How did he get from one to the other? Because he finally learned to trust God, believing He would do what He said He would. And that took time to build such consistency.
When it is early on in your faith, don't doubt God...even if you think He is asking too much of you. Give it time. Follow His word. Then you, too, will have the courage to resist compromise.
