The Great Battle For The Soul (#7)
Jeff Smith

We continue our examination of the components of the Christian's armor, given in Eph. 6:10-18.

The Shield (v. 16)

The ancient soldier's shield was not just a small piece of metal. Most shields were full body coverings, dimensions of which were 4 ft. x 2½ ft. They were not made of pasteboard, but were solid, having a metal liner to reinforce their ability to repel the enemy's artillery (fiery darts, lances, and spears). Other than the breastplate protecting his vital organs, this may have well been the soldier's most valuable defensive weapon.

Special emphasis is made of "flaming missiles" [NASV]. Fiery arrows were used in warfare to set fire to the enemy's tent, chariot, wagon, or his clothing.

The Christian soldier's shield is "faith," or his unshakable trust in undeniable facts (cp. Heb. 11:1). True faith comes from hearing the Lord (Rom. 10:17). Such committed conviction is able to ward off temptation, doubt, fear, human wisdom, envy, lusts, or other deadly attempts used by Satan to drag us down to destruction with him. Faith is where "Christian character" begins (2 Pet. 1:5-8). Following Christ will require faith (Jn. 8:24). The Roman soldier's shield only deflected assaults hurled at him. Our "shield of faith" is able to "quench" Satan's hellish missiles.

The Helmet (v. 17)

The soldier's head gear was normally a metal covering decorated with engravings or plummage. It gave the soldier protection from head blows or enemy missiles.

What is it that enables us to "hold our heads high" with courage? Is it not our salvation? While never encouraging pride, we are to have confidence and assurance that God has saved us from Satan's sinful snares (cp. 2 Tim. 1:12). God has indeed forgiven our sinful past (Heb. 8:12). This alone should instill in us a confident appreciation for God and His grace. Although we can cast our "helmet" aside (and sadly, many soldiers of Christ do), the enemy can never come and strip it from us against our will. Rejoice...God has saved you if you faithfully follow Christ!!
