Authoritatively Speaking... (#1)
Jeff Smith

Have you ever stopped to think what makes us (members of the Lord's church, the church of Christ) different from all other religious folk? I have...on several occasions. As best as I can tell, the main difference between us and other religious groups is how we view the word of God.

Sure, many people have a belief in God. Millions reject the notion of evolution. Countless thousands do not agree with nor support religions who deny Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God. Are we, therefore, in fellowship with them based on these "litmus tests"? No, and for good reasons. Our desire is our Lord's found in Jn. 17:21. We want "all to be one." Yet, the religious landscape is littered with church after church begun for one reason or another. Even churches across from one another at the same intersection do not teach the same doctrine (cp. 1 Cor. 4:17; 7:17).

If there are differences among churches and the people who comprise them, these differences are quickly chalked up to the fact that we just do not all interpret the Bible the same way (as if that really excuses us). How pompous we are (Rom. 1:18-25)!!

Is it really of no consequence that we (as a society) differ in our approach to the word of God? Are you aware of any movements crossing "denominational lines" to get all men back to a common view of the Bible? I'm not. We just "agree to disagree."

Jesus taught differently than other religious teachers of His day...and the people recognized it (Mt. 7:24-28). He condemned religious doctrine that did not ring true to the very intent of God's word (Mt. 5:21-48). We are told to confine ourselves only where the word of God leads us (2 Jn. 9; 1 Pet. 4:11).

Jesus said He has all authority (Mt. 28:18). He is going to judge in an authoritative way (Mt. 25:31-46; Jn. 12:48). We will have answer to Him (2 Cor. 5:11). It is hoped the coming series of articles on the basic issue of Authority will reinforce why we do what we do. We're going to dig down to the very core of this all-important topic. Yes, we'll cover the obligatory ways to establish authority, etc. But it doesn't begin there. It all begins with God. We hope you'll join us.
