So far in this series, we have described God as the most unique Being that exists. He is inherently holy. Furthermore, we have extolled His word as absolutely true, without error and always "for our good." If we truly are interested in uniting all mankind under such a God, the next logical step would be to discuss man's purpose before Him who has revealed His mind to us.
Despite the claims of the atheist and the evolutionist, all mankind is made in the image of God (Gen. 1:26-27). No one can call into question how God has made us (Rom. 9:20). The thing made can never lecture the maker. Any and all good the created thing can do is to the credit of the maker. The thing made owes its existence to its fashioner. The thing made must accept the purpose for which it was made. This is a foundational principle with respect to Bible authority.
As our Maker, God has desires for us that we are obligated to fulfill. In other words, we absolutely owe Him. What does He want of us? For starters, God wants all men everywhere to "seek after Him and find Him" (Acts 17:27). The fact that God wants to be found ought to tell us something. We will only "find" God where He has made Himself available to us... His word. That is why we must "fear Him and keep His commandments, for this is the whole (duty) of man" (Eccl. 12:13-14). God has set for our purpose that "mortality be swallowed up by life. Now He who prepared us for this very thing is God,..." (2 Cor. 5:4b-5). What else could be offered to us that is better or more worthwhile than this?
All religious people would more or less agree with everything written so far. Yes, God is Maker. Yes, He wants us to "find Him." Yes, He has prepared heaven for us. Yes, Jesus is Lord. However, we all need to read Lk. 6:46. "Why do you call Me 'Lord, Lord' and do not do the things that I say?" This gets right to the heart of the matter. Our purpose is to obey Him. The fact that we are religiously divided proves all do not obey Him. That is why authority is important.
