Many people are greatly worried about the computer problems that may happen when our calendars turn over to the year 2000. The problems are based upon the fact that early computers used only two digits to denote the year. Thus, come January 1st, there will be some computers thinking that it is 1900 instead of 2000.While everyone agrees that some problems are sure to result, there are certain people who think the situation is very grave, and that the consequences will be severe. They are predicting everything from power outages to food shortages to total economic collapse. Not a few think that these problems will lead to civil unrest and riots.
In preparation for Y2K (the year 2000) there are people who are laying up huge supplies of non-perishable food, installing electric generators, hoarding money, etc. In reality, these alarmists will probably cause greater havoc than the Y2K problem itself. Any food shortages or economic problems that develop will likely be the result of their extreme efforts to prepare for the turn of the century.
What is amazing is that these folks are expending great effort and lots of money to prepare for something that may never develop. They are not sure if anything will happen and, if it does happen, what it will be. Seems odd, doesn't it?
On the other hand, there is an event out there in the future that we KNOW will come to pass. The Lord will return in final judgment (Acts 17:30,31) and the results will be totally devastating to all who have not prepared (Matthew 25:31-46). No one knows when this will happen (1 Thessalonians 5:2,3), so it only makes sense to stay constantly prepared (Matthew 24:44). You see, Y2K compliance isn't nearly so important as complying with God's law in preparation for eternity. Are you ready?
