Seniors Only Once
Bobby Duncan

Should young people attend the prom because they are . . . "Seniors Only Once"

Can you believe we are down to graduation time? Our high school seniors are now counting the time until graduation in weeks, not months or years. This is an exciting time in the lives of high school seniors and their parents.

With the approach of graduation comes also the annual prom. To some, this prom is considered the big event, not only of the senior year, but of the entire high school experience.

The Bible plainly teaches that it is wrong to dance. The evidence which proves dancing wrong is overwhelming and irrefutable. The appeal of the dance is the same as the appeal of parking and petting. And the ultimate end toward which they lead is the same. Those who have lived long enough to be parents know this to be true, even though their sons and daughters may not yet know it.

"But these children are seniors only once in their lives." This statement is sometimes made to suggest that it's O.K. to sin, since this is the only opportunity these young people will ever have to commit this particular sin as high school seniors. One would be led to believe that he is allowing to pass a great opportunity that will never again present itself. The truth of the matter is that high school seniors have an opportunity to do something they will never again have the opportunity to do. They will never again have such a great opportunity to demonstrate that loyalty to Christ is more important than anything else. Remember, you are a senior only once, and never again will you be able to show those who know you that even the senior prom cannot cause you to put yourself in a compromising position. If you choose to go to the prom, you will have passed by an opportunity to do the will of God that will never present itself again. You may have some similar opportunities, but not this one; you are a senior only once.

A number of years ago in a certain Alabama town, the Junior Class elected as its President a young man who was a Christian. When prom time rolled around, he was told that he would be expected to lead out at the dance. He said he would not be present for the dance, and he was not. The next year that same young man was elected by his classmates to be the President of the Senior Class, even though they knew of his strong convictions. When prom time came, he again did not attend. What an impression for good he was able to make - and when the opportunity was past, it was gone forever.

Juniors and Seniors, do not let the opportunity to show your strong convictions pass you by. If you take advantage of the opportunity to show where your priorities lie, you will never have reason to regret it.

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you" (Mafthew6:33).
